Google Cloud Trace finds what's slowing your apps down

GOOGLE HAS ANNOUNCED a tool designed to help users of its cloud services to isolate and identify bottlenecks in their systems.Google Cloud Trace, first announced at Google I/O last year, has been released as an open beta to all customers of Google Cloud.According to the Google Cloud blog, the tool can "diagnose performance issues in your production application by quickly finding the traces for slow requests and viewing a detailed report of where time is spent in your application".It also has a trace analysis feature that can ascertain latency distribution, and "find the painfully slow requests that may be affecting only a small number of your users". One use case cited is the ability to compare a new version of a release over a previous one to ensure improvements. The GUI can create layered graphs comparing the latencies of new and old versions in an overlaid format.Traces can be activated from the settings in the Google Developers Console. Google has confirmed that Traces has negligible overheads itself and so will not impact on the performance of projects.Google has been looking to build a stronger presence for its enterprise cloud offerings and hosting capabilities in part through the launch ofGoogle For Work, a product brand bringing together all aspects of its enterprise offerings from managed device deployment in Android, through to big data analysis. For small businesses and start-ups, the companyhas offered $10,000 credit lines to help enterprises get set up in the Google Cloud, under the old maxim of "grab them early and keep them for life".In August, the company purchased graphics rendering company Zync Render. While known to many as an effects house for sci-fi films, the company has recognised the wider advantages of graphics rendering in other industries.
