Why isn’t wireless device charging more popular than it is? We could spend all day offering reasons (and occasionally we do), from speed, to cost, to the lack of bundled chargers with devices that support them. One of those myriad reasons is the fear of incompatibility, a situation not helped any by the lack of a universal wireless charging standard. The good news is we’ve already seen steps being taken in the right direction towards resolving that situation, and this week we get word of a major milestone towards simplifying the wireless charging landscape, as two of the existing industry organizations backing certain standards announce their intention to merge.For a while now, we’ve had three main players: the Power Matters Alliance (the PMA guys), the Wireless Power Consortium (the Qi guys), and the Alliance for Wireless Power (or A4WP). PMA and A4WP were already helping each other out, and last year the groups revealed their intent to work together on supporting each other’s standards. Now they’re taking things one step further, and will merge into a single entity sometime later this year.That still leaves us with the PMA/Qi split, but this feels like progress all the same. And with the arrival of hardware that can pull dual PMA/Qi operation, even that may soon be a distinction that fails to have a detrimental impact on compatibility.
