Even though most of us agree that Microsoft has done an amazing job at closing the app gap over the last couple of years, that doesn’t change the fact that the iOS and Android currently sports almost triple the amount of apps on Windows Phone. The market share difference between these three platforms still leaves a significant challenge for developers to consider Windows Phone, even after the platform’s fourth anniversary. Microsoft’s new leadership has the task of improving these numbers soon, and today we learn how the company plans to do it.Mary Jo Foley is famous for her insider stories on Microsoft, and today, her unnamed sources claim that Microsoft’s strategy to fix the app gap is focused on two plans. Plan A is definitely for Microsoft to attract developers to build apps that are compatible with every Microsoft product under the new Windows 10 focus, something we’ve all agreed is a very compelling strategy. In this plan, Microsoft will focus on attracting new independent software developers (ISVs) and will use its existing Developer Experience team as guides for developers to build the best apps possible.Plan B is no surprise, as we still hear more details on how Microsoft plans to adopt Android applications if things go wrong. We don’t know if the support for Android will work across all Windows 10 products, but we do know that this will not necesarily leave Microsoft with a good reputation among the developers that already take the extra time to support Windows Phone. We’ll give you more details as we learn more in the next coming weeks.
